In Marlboro, NJ, I saw that the Rav asks five questions before Krias HaTorah. Some are simple. Others are carefully crafted to spotlight things that most people do not notice, but if they pay attention will they realize the answer. They do not involve Rashi or Targum or anything other than paying serious attention.
